Background

Physics, satellites, then the cluster

Amirkhan Temirbayev has delivered scientific and technological projects in supercomputing, artificial intelligence, small spacecraft, STEM education, and the commercialisation of research. He focuses on applied science, interdisciplinary work, and training specialists who can operate at the intersection of science, engineering, and digital technology. Under his leadership the centre is growing as academic and technological infrastructure that brings together scientists, engineers, students, government organisations, and industrial partners. The core focus is access to supercomputer resources, support for research projects, adoption of AI, and building a culture of high-performance computing in Kazakhstan.

The centre’s leadership aims to make the supercomputer not only computing infrastructure, but a tool for advancing science, education, technology, and the economy of Kazakhstan.

  • 01

    Runs Farabi Supercomputer Center (~2 PFLOPS, Top 600), including operations and remote access (since 2025).

    Director of KazNU Science and Technology Park (2015–2019); General Director of the Cluster of Engineering and High Technologies (2019–2025).

    Project lead for creating Kazakhstan’s first university nanosatellites Al-Farabi-1 and Al-Farabi-2 (2015–2018).

    Coordinator of the UniSat education programme, a joint project of UNICEF Kazakhstan and KazNU (2020–2025).

Nonlinear dynamics

Oscillator ensembles, synchronization, and pattern formation; work in Physical Review E with international co-authors.

CubeSats & antennas

CubeSat communications and antennas for Earth observation — L/S-band deployables, dual-band patches, TT&C (IEEE Access and related venues).

HPC & Earth observation AI

Weather prediction, remote-sensing change detection, and related AI on Farabi with national partners.

STEM & UniSat

UniSat (UNICEF × KazNU) and teaching in electronics, information security, and dynamical systems.
